Norway will increase its level of alert starting today (2 November). This will allow more personnel to be assigned to operational duties as well as a greater role for a rapid mobilization force in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine.
The chief of defense, General Eirik Kristoffersen stated that Norway will try to get its new fleet of US-made P-8 Poseidon sub-hunting maritime patrol plane into regular service at a quicker pace than originally planned.
However, the scale of alert that the military uses is classified and the government has declined to provide details.
Kristoffersen said that there were no threats to Norway right now, and rather, the sum of "the uncertainties," was driving authorities to increase the country's military readiness.
He stated that he had witnessed an increase in the conflict in Ukraine and that Norway is training Ukrainian forces. "The Ukraine war has changed due to the Russian mobilization," he said in an interview.
"And simultaneously, we had a gas explosion at the Baltic Sea and drone activity on North Sea platforms."
Kristoffersen said that the raised level will last for a year and "possibly longer".
PLATFORMS OFFSHORE
Norway was the first to deploy its military offshore platforms and onshore facilities guarding against potential leaks from the Nord Stream pipes. This deployment took place in Swedish and Danish waters on 26 September. It received support from British and French armed forces.
Last week, a Russian spy suspected was arrested by the country's security forces. He is also believed to be involved in protecting Europe's gas exports.
NATO member Norway shares nearly 200 km (125 miles) of land border with Russia in Arctic. There is also a large maritime border.
After a decline in Russian flows, the Nordic nation of 5.4 million people now accounts for about 25% of all EU imports.
"Russia's attempts to weaken (international) support for Ukraine and the continuation of the war in Ukraine means that all European countries must recognize that they are vulnerable to hybrid threats. Norway included," Prime Minister Jonas Garh Stoere said.
The armed forces will be able to spend more time operating and less training. The Home Guard, which is a rapid mobilization force, will be more active.
Kristoffersen stated that the air force decided to stop training in the United States using its F35 fighter jets and prefer to train in Norway.
