#EESC 7th ECI טאָג שיידז אויף נייַע #ECI פאָרשלאָג
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is organizing its 7th European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) Day on 10 April at its headquarters, Rue Belliard 99, in Brussels.
EESC-President Georges Dassis will open the event, which will focus on a new Commission proposal which is redefining and reshaping ECI. Will it encourage effectively the institutions and the Europeans to "work together"? An in-depth analysis of the change in process and beyond will be proposed throughout the day.
We are glad to announce that First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmerman, MEPs György Schöpflin, Josep-Maria Terricabras, European Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly, EESC Various Interests Group president Luca Jahier and many more high-level speakers from member states' governments, including Monika Panayotova, Deputy Minister for the Bulgarian Presidency and State Secretary Karoline Edtstadler from the Austrian Ministry of Interiour, academics, the EESC as well as former and present ECI initiators have already confirmed their attendance.

People say: "Constant dripping wears away the rock." That can also be applied to the European citizens' initiative. While many Europeans were enthusiastic at the launch of this important instrument for active citizen participation, the enthusiasm soon faded after realising how complicated the bureaucracy behind it was and how little impact it was having. However, last year – after constant calls not only from the EESC, but also from the European Parliament and European Ombudsman to the Commission – First Vice-President Timmermans announced the revision of the ECI.
The ECI Day 2018 therefore will seize the moment and discuss the new procedure and the new role for all institutional and civil society stakeholders. We will also look into what is needed for the ECI to become a visible and impactful tool that recognises the citizens' efforts to advocate for change. Our theme of ארבעטן צוזאַמען is intended to underline the value of cooperation and the shared responsibility for promoting active citizenship.
More on the ECI-Day, the final programme and the participants is available on the וועבזייַטל.
