Intensive work started in Bulgaria on the creation of a new right-wing, conservative project under the auspices of the European Parliament. This became clear during a three-day conference in Sofia on the topic 'Right Turn', organized by Nikolay Barekov, a Bulgarian MEP from the European Conservatives and Reformists.

The event was attended by prominent representatives of European conservative parties and Bulgarian public figures, analysts and politicians from the conservative, right-wing political spectrum. Among the special guests were the former chairman of the National Assembly Ognian Gerdjikov and the former caretaker prime minister of Bulgaria, Reneta Indzhova.

After heated discussion on the question is conservatism possible in Bulgaria as a political issue, project and vision for the future and for the present of the country, all participants were united around the idea that a modern conservative project in Bulgaria is not only possible but is also indispensable today, given the lack of political alternative. The participants were explicit that the project has a future as long as politicians take hold firmly to work, to be united and not to split. This was the advice from Tomasz Poreba MEP, who has won three electoral battles in Poland.

During the discussions participants analyzed the current political situation in Bulgaria in the context of the upcoming presidential elections 2016. They discussed the nomination of a single application, bringing together all political actors from the right wing. Speaking on the topic former Foreign Minister Solomon Passy even named specific individuals. As the most appropriate he described applications of Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Petar Stoyanov and prof. Ognyan Gerdzhikov. "The great call of the modern left and the modern right today is to manage with united efforts to overcome populism, which currently is wading in the same relentless way both Europe and the US," Solomon Passy said.

Poverty, ineffective economy, lack of production, debt spiral – this is the current situation in the country, Barekov outlined and he put a question to participants: Can conservatism be the answer to these ills, the drug, which can heal the sick political elite and the sick economy of Bulgaria?

Lord Martin Callanan was explicit that conservative policy is the best solution for Europe. Callanan - a British Conservative Party politician, chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists (2011-2014), current member of the House of Lords (the upper house of the UK Parliament) was a special guest of the forum. During the conference he delivered an extensive lecture, which addressed the issue of a conservative trend in Europe and the opportunities for Bulgaria. In his opinion it is very important that political parties of the main stream of center-right conservatism can rely on the highest possible values - to fight corruption and lack of the rule of law. "If we do all those things and if we put those programs in project to the people in democracies, they are so proud of, I think that there can be a great, bright future for conservatism both in Western and Eastern Europe and especially in Bulgaria," Lord Martin Callanan said.

In an extensive statement Tomasz Poreba – a Polish MEP, member of the Bureau of the ECR Group and chairman of the conservative European think-tank 'New Direction' - presented the activities of the unique in the conservative movement in Brussels think-tank and clarify the ideas ECR believe in and fight for in Parliament. Thanking his counterpart Barekov for the invitation, Poreba said that owing to their excellent cooperation, the presence of "New Direction" in Bulgaria will grow stronger. "Together I hope we will be able to fulfill a number of successful projects through which to spread the values of conservatism in your country," the Polish MEP said. All movements that wish to cooperate with the "New Direction" are welcome and the Foundation remains fully available to all movements in Bulgaria who share its vision, ideas and values, he said.

At the end of the forum Poreba met with all Bulgarian politicians, who are interested to join the Alliance of European Conservatives and are willing to work for the creation of a conservative project in Bulgaria, supported by the European Parliament.

In the European Parliament we believe that conservatism is the only answer that can help the EU to have a future, said the host of the forum, Nikolay Barekov. He pointed out five features that defined modern conservatism from liberalism. "First, it rests on family values, the values of the nation, second - conservative policy is based on pragmatism, third - social policy, fourth - priorities in foreign policy, fifth - patriotism," the MEP said. He is adamant that as an idea the conservatism and especially the modern conservatism have a huge future in Bulgaria and Europe.
