Seb Dance MEP attacked the government’s treatment of EU citizens following the Referendum result. A member of the cross-party  “European Citizens Task Force” - set up to investigate reports of the UK Home Office using restrictive interpretations of the rules on sufficient resources and health insurance cover, in order to restrict the rights of EU citizens in the UK -  called for infringement procedures against the UK for violating freedom of movement rules.

The European Commission refused to rule out infringement procedures against the UK government for violating Article 45 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights which “established and guarantees the right of every EU citizen to move and reside freely within the territory of the member states”. The Commission repeated that until the UK leaves the EU in 2019 it must continue to apply EU laws regarding free movement.

Seb Dance, MEP for London, said during the debate: "The government is sending a terrible signal by refusing to acknowledge and respect the rights of three million citizens living in the UK. This is damaging our economy, damaging our public services and sending a signal to our fellow citizens that they are not wanted. That is not British, nor is it the Britain I know."

Dance’s comments come as the House of Lords vote in favour of EU-27 residents being given a right to stay in the EU. The Lords amendment will probably be overturned by the House of Commons, but it will mean that they will have to vote on this issue again. Once the bill is adopted Prime Minister May will be able to trigger Article 50.
