Following today´s meeting of the President of the European Parliament with Paolo Alli, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, President Antonio Tajani stated: “The security and defence of the European citizens are top priorities for my mandate. Europe needs to deliver on security and for that to happen we need to cooperate across borders and across institutions. This is why I called for this meeting with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly at the very beginning of my mandate.”

The meeting focused on possible ways of reinforcing the cooperation between the European Parliament and the Assembly. Both Presidents agreed that the current international situation calls for the strengthening of relations between the European Union and NATO. They committed to enhancing the European Parliament’s engagement with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, through committee and sub-committee activities, visits and inter-parliamentary initiatives.

Background on the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA):

The Assembly brings together parliamentarians of all the member states of the Atlantic Alliance. The NATO PA is made up of 257 delegates from the 28 NATO member countries. In addition to NATO country delegates, delegates from 13 associate countries, 4 Mediterranean associate countries, as well as 8 parliamentary observer delegations take part in its activities, bringing the total number of delegates to approximately 360.

The European Parliament, through its Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, brings the EU dimension to this parliamentary forum. Other parliamentary delegations are invited on an ad hoc basis for certain meetings and activities.
