161025ebaema2Ireland the home of "one of the most expensive banking crises in world history" according to its former-central bank Governor Patrick Honohan, has just thrown its hat into the ring to host the European Banking Authority. Britain's neighbours are also staking a claim on the European Medicines Agency.

Minister for Finance Michael Noonan said:  “Ireland has a significant financial services sector, efficient transport links to other European capitals, and the capacity to absorb the European Banking Authority’s re-location to Ireland. Our interest in hosting the EBA demonstrates the continued importance Ireland places in well-regulated Financial Services.”

The Irish Government has agreed - on the recommendation of the Minister for Finance - to make a public declaration of interest in Ireland becoming the location for the offices of the European Banking Authority.

Following a discussion with his cabinet colleagues today the Minister for Finance said: “While the UK continues to be a full member of the EU until the negotiations for their exit have been completed, preparations must be made for eventualities such as the relocation of certain European agencies such as the European Banking Authority. Ireland has a significant financial services sector, efficient transport links to other European capitals and the capacity to absorb the European Banking Authority’s re-location to Ireland.”

Ireland is also a front runner to host the European Medicines Agency

Ireland’s Minister for Health, Simon Harris also staked a claim on the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in the aftermath of Brexit.

Minister Harris said:  “The Irish Government believes that Dublin would be the best place to relocate the European Medicines Agency, now that the UK is leaving the EU. A move to Ireland’s English-speaking capital would minimise disruption to EMA work, as well as to staff and families. The Irish medicines regulator is in a strong position to support the EMA; this would ensure continued protection of EU citizens and reassure the industries which it regulates.”

Minister Harris also noted that Dublin is an English-speaking location, and that English is the working language of the EMA and the pharmaceutical industry.

The Irish Government will develop a detailed proposal by early 2017. Ireland will promote Dublin as the new home for the EMA, to the European Commission and other Member States.

EUROPEAN באַנקינג אויטאריטעט

The European Banking Authority is the EU agency tasked with achieving a harmonised and integrated approach to banking supervision across the EU Member States. As part of the negotiations associated with the UK’s decision to withdraw from the EU it will be necessary for the European Banking Authority to relocate to an EU Member State from its current location in London.

The core areas of the EBA’s work are regulatory policy, supervisory convergence and risk assessment, as well as consumer protection and financial innovation. The core functions of the EBA are the establishment of a single rulebook on banking supervision, harmonised understanding in the application of the rulebook by supervisors, monitoring and maintenance of high standards of supervision, and strengthening oversight of cross-border banking groups.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is a decentralised agency of the European Union (EU), located in London. It began operating in 1995. The Agency is responsible for the scientific evaluation, supervision and safety monitoring of medicines developed by pharmaceutical companies for use in the EU.

EMA protects public and animal health in 28 EU Member States, as well as the countries of the European Economic Area, by ensuring that all medicines available on the EU market are safe, effective and of high quality.

EMA serves a market of over 500 million people living in the EU.
